Blogger News Network: Shame of the Internet -Part 2-
As mentioned in Part 1 the number of web hits BNN was getting in December/2008 was around 160,000. That was at the height of the Casey Anthony case and since then the number of visitors has been in a steady decline. By the end of April and early May 2009 those numbers were down to around 50-60,000. A very drastic drop indeed.
Around this time in Orange County the prosecutors were trying to find out how Casey Anthony was paying for her defense. But after a closed door meeting with the judge it was decided that the information was not going to be released, not to the prosecution or the public. This was seen by BNN as a possible means to change the downward spiral in readership and advertising revenue, at any cost.
Enter the Money Trail (April 23). The first article titled “The plot gets deeper and the smell gets worse” is actually a lead up to what will be the Money Trail series. Promising to upstage Nancy Grace with an Atomic Bombshell and a story that will blow your socks off. But first they are waiting for calls to be returned, and facts to be verified. So why write anything then? The only logical reason was to start the rumor mill and attract curious readers.
The Money Trail part 1 (April 24th). The day after the promise of Bombshells and bare feet another article is written and one would assume then that new information had been received. No, not true. All this article contains is more promises of of a big story, and it’s so huge that they will have to change their names after it is published. A mysterious name keeps popping up they say and oh they are certain they know who the “Money Guy” is. But no names are mentioned, and no new information is produced.
The Money Trail part 2 (April 25th). As you can see from the graph the numbers are starting to climb as more and more people visit the site to find out what the big “Bombshell” is. You remember, the one promised 2 days ago. One has to wonder if those facts have been verified yet, or if any of those phone calls have been returned. But apparently not, aside from dragging Kidfinders and some other people in to the fantasy, again no news or evidence is presented.
The Money Trail Part 3 (April 26th). This the 3rd day now after the big bold chest pounding braggart told the world he is about to upstage Nancy Grace and bring the players in this “saga” to their knees. Absolutely nothing of value is written in this article, but just another day stringing people along watching the numbers climb.
The Money Trail Part 4 (April 28th). 5 days after this whole thing started and still not a single thing mentioned about that evidence that was waiting to be verified. Not a single word about any phone calls, confirmation, or justification for all these stories. Simon Barrett the editor says “draw your own conclusions”. Of what? And then further down in the article names the “Money Guy” as someone that donated money to the reward for Caylee Anthony’s safe return. That’s quite a leap. Without a single bit of evidence or proof? After all those promises and build up towards the big “Bombshell” he tells people to make up their own minds, but tosses out his “opinion” based on nothing but guesswork and hypothesis. And again at the end says that nothing could be verified.
At this point it looks like people have had enough with the false promises and empty rhetoric that BNN has been trying to pass off as “Breaking News”. If you look at the graph the numbers are plummeting once again. I suppose at this point I would just be guessing as to the reasons why they did what they did next. Desperation? A form of diversion away from the truth?
Nothing is mentioned about the Money Trail again till the 6th of May, where more names are tossed about but no evidence yet again. In the meantime as the numbers are dropping BNN embarks on a totally different subject, to get the focus off the Money Trail fiasco and try a different approach to increase their ad revenues.
May 1st marked the beginning of the end for freedom of speech, the quest to find the truth, or fair and respectful dialogue at BNN. Connie Bedwell had found a new platform to spread her story, and BNN had found a new cause. Only this time different opinions are not welcome, public comments are closed and any others strictly controlled in a private forum.
At this point it is safe to say that Nancy Grace is safe, there is and never was any “Atomic Bombshell”. The Money Trail was a blind walk in the woods. Simon did get one thing right though, as mentioned in the first article, the smell did get worse.
