Star Trek vs Reality
The dictionary has many definitions of the word Evolution, the first is “any process of formation or growth; development“. How this ties in to the tittle is my belief that we are no longer evolving, as a race. Now, it may be true that our bodies are still evolving. I am going to stay away from the scientific and biological side of this because really, there is nothing we can do about it. What I am talking about how we as a species seem to be going backwards, or at least grinding to a stop. If we examine human behavior over the past 200 years, a few different conclusions can be reached. Depending on how you look at it we have come a long way, or we have started going backwards. Economics and the acquisition of wealth is the main force and desire in our lives, and it has to stop.
Now I am sure that a few people are going to disagree with me, and likely more than a few will criticize what I am bout to say and that’s fine. For many years now our race has been slipping backwards, and instead of growing and expanding ourselves we have lost sight of what is important. And it certainly is not, money. If a person makes $500,000 a year does that make them any more important, or special, than a person making $50,000? What about a person living below the poverty line? Shouldn’t every human being have the same chances at life? Just because I am white, English speaking, and educated should not mean I am entitled to more than a person who is a different color, speaks a different language, and has no access to education. This is not about religion, racism, or language. It’s about life.
I do not want to hear about the differences that exist, or the problems there would be in changing the way we are. A solution will not come quickly, or easy. A recent movie had the line “at the precipice we evolve”, and I wonder how true that possibility is. Today our Society is geared around money. If you have it you will live a better life than someone that does not. The more you have the better it will be. There is enough money right now that if spread around everyone would be rich. Everyone. Yet we have people living on the streets, and children going to bed hungry. Does that sound like a race that is evolving?
Why is that not going to happen? Well among other reasons, greed. The people that have it will not part with it, and the people that don’t have it are never satisfied. That is a very broad and general statement yes but mostly true. What if everyone could do what they loved to do while contributing to Society at the same time? Most people have no desire to do menial labour because it does not pay enough. So without money in the equation there would be no such think as unskilled labour. In a harmonious Society every job is important, and people are just doing their part. And everyone has enough for food, housing, and clothing, etc.
My blog is picked up by 3 different websites and linked to 6 other blog sites, so a lot of different people are going to read this. I would guess that over 60% of those people have a taxable income over $100,000. Now without doing some type of survey or questionnaire, it is impossible to determine how many of those people have a very high level of education. And if that education alone is why they hold their current position. How is that relevant? I believe that with the proper training for a specific job, anyone could do it, regardless of their education level. I am talking about jobs, not research, or positions that require unique talents that only some people possess. Not just anyone could be a doctor, or an architect. But a doctor, or an architect, is no more needed in a Society than a bricklayer, or a cook.
Which brings me to Star Trek, and the late Gene Roddenberry. His bold and outrageous vision of our future has such an appeal around the world for different reasons, and it is not all about lasers, torpedoes, and sexy aliens. It’s about life and a great many different forms of it existing peacefully together, working towards a common goal. Life, love, and learning. Exploring and discovering new things not for profit, but for knowledge, and for the benefit of all.
I will not see this in my lifetime but it is my believe that for the human race to endure, we must boldly go this way. If we don’t, we will not survive.
