Are our Children Safe at School?
This is the gate I go through in the morning to drop my children off for school. My girls are 4 and 6 years old. After we kiss and say goodbye they play outside before the bell rings and they go in. There is a teacher out there in the playground watching them but I am not certain how many at any given time. I do know there is upwards to 20-30 kids out there before the bell rings. What is very disturbing is that there is no lock on this gate, and in fact does not even have a latch on it to keep it closed. There are signs on every door that any “visitor” entering must report to the office, but this gate has no signs, no lock, and is open all the time. I have made my concerns known to the school and will wait and see how long or even if anything is done about it. The point is, how many other schools have similar security lapses and how long before someone notices and changes it?
Parents need to be more aware of these things and don’t just assume their kids will be safe at school.
The picture on the right shows the same gate but a different angle. It shows that even if the gate was latched and locked, anyone could just walk through it and enter, or leave, the school grounds. In my opinion that is completely ludicrous and unacceptable.
What say you?

Out of curiousity what is the total enrollment at this school Beast? My immediate concern was so many doors used for arrival and dismissal. IIRC, my sons school has one door for walkers, one for bus and another for parents drivers dropping off and picking up. However IIRC the total enrollment of my sons school (parochial) is pretty small, under 350 I think. (3 and 4 yr old pre-k through 8th).
When he first started KG I was freaked by the number of train commuters who walked “cut” right through the parking lot… but the kids are never left without adult supervision and numerous adults.
keep us updated! I agree there should at least be a latch to keep the gate closed, if not locked. It would keep the kiddo’s from getting away easily….

Jr kg through 6th with a total enrollment of only 217? wow! There should be no reason why there is not enough staff to properly observe a child before the child leaves. I competely agree. There minimally no needs to be a latch on that gate and high enough the little ones can not reach. Preferably a latch which needs two hands to open. I forget what they are called but some need two hands. I’ve seen them on solid wooden gates to close off garages which sit to the rear of the house.

On the other side of the school it is worse. This is where we pick the kids up at night. No gates AT ALL and students are standing around waiting for the bus, or get picked up, and there is no separation between students and buses.
I still have not heard anything from the Board regarding my email. And to make matters worse (if that is possible) our 6 year olds teacher suggests that she is old enough to come outside after school by herself to wait for us. What? Are they for real? It boggles my mind that nothing has happened yet at that School. And I’ll be damned if something happens to my children that will be the catalyst for change.

Well it’s now Oct 7 and still no reply from the school, or the board. I’m not surprised.
